Mexico’s high prevalence of diabetes, which is one of the leading causes of death in the country, is only expected to get worse in the coming decades. While certain markets already offer targeted coverage and wellness programs for diabetics, the insurance industry in Mexico has until now struggled to serve this growing population.
To address this shortcoming, the RGA Latin America team launched a bold initiative to change the way insurance was conceptualized and sold digitally in Mexico. The result: Amae, a digitally delivered insurance product and Mexico’s first coverage targeted exclusively to individuals with Type 2 diabetes.
RGA partnered with a local insurance company and several other local experts – digital marketers, web developers, and health services specialists – each contributing specialized expertise to the venture. More than insurance alone, Amae offers extensive health management services for diabetics through an interactive online hub, including diet and exercise plans, medical monitoring, and a wellness rewards program.
The comprehensive digital platform was designed to accommodate future opportunities to market insurance products to people with diabetes and other chronic diseases.
Launched on June 1, 2020, a digital sales pilot targeting consumers in Mexico City achieved great success, creating a large community of followers on social networks and adding many new policyholders. The innovative initiative and its success were also recognized by the industry: Amae earned Celent’s prestigious Model Insurer 2021 Award for Digital and Emerging Technologies.
While digital transformation remains new territory for insurers in Mexico, Amae may be a catalyst for changing that.
